CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE

WHO ARE WE?

The Catholic Women’s League (CWL) is affiliated to the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organisation (WUCWO) and has the approval and support of the Southern African Catholic Bishops Conference. The League strives to be a sign of hope, love and reconciliation to people of all socio-economic and cultural groups by actively involving its members in the various affairs of the community.

OBJECTIVES:

· To unite Catholic women in their service to God, the Church, the family and the country under the direction of its Executive members

· To assist with parish work under the guidance of the parish priest

· To consolidate Catholic action among Catholic women in defense of Catholic principles

· To engage in Catholic social welfare activities such as care of the aged, family welfare and community work.

WHAT DO WE DO?

Last year with the help of our special and very active members we proudly assisted with the following:

· Hosted the International Women’s Day of Prayer at our parish.

· Held an Easter raffle, the funds of which went to supporting the elderly and retired priests of Sabon House providing them each with toiletries on a bi-monthly basis as well as hot cross buns and chocolate.

· We bought soft toys and hot cross buns for the children under the care of The Sisters of Charity.

· We assisted the Saint Vincent de Paul Society with funds used to feed numerous families in the Verulam/Ottawa area.

· With the help of the parish community, we were able to provide suitcases for those who had been affected by the floods/fires to enable them to store their belongings.

· To bring our parish community together post Covid, we hosted a Cheese and Wine event.

· We donated pots for the newly built garden of remembrance.

· We delivered donuts to our teens who were taking part in their annual retreat to show that we were holding them in prayer as “mothers” of our community.

· We have provided our services by pouring tea for numerous funerals.

· Our members have knitted baby blankets and beanies for the Caring Fund and collected plastic bottle tops and tags which we have given to the members of the Durban North branch as a joint venture to provide wheelchairs to those in need.

· Again, with the assistance of our parish community we were able to provide toys to the children of the Dalton Creche and the CWL has provided each child with a new outfit as part of our Christmas gift drive.

· Throughout the year, we recognize the importance of our 2 parish priests and always spoil them on fathers’ day, birthdays, priesthood Sunday etc.

· We paid for the tertiary education of one of the Parish staff member’s children.

· With the very kind assistance of St Henry’s School, we sang Christmas carols at Nazareth House as well as providing shortbread and mince pies to the elderly.

WHEN DO WE MEET?

The CWL meets on the third Wednesday of every month after the 8.30 am Mass in the hall at Blessed Sacrament Church.
